Conquer the Legend: The Winterberg Enduro

Experience the raw power and enduring legacy of one of South Africa’s oldest enduro races. Since its 1976 debut, the Winterberg Enduro has evolved into a cornerstone of the National Enduro Championship, challenging the country’s elite riders with its signature blend of technical riverbeds, relentless mountain climbs. Hosted by the Rover Motorcycle Club, this event is more than just a race; it’s a high-stakes journey through the rugged Eastern Cape landscape, where legends like Alfie Cox built their reputations and where every rider must push their physical and mental limits to earn a finish.

Origins

The race was founded in 1976 by Brausch Niemann and friends after trail-riding in the Winterhoek mountains.

Difficulty

It is known for its extreme toughness, featuring technical climbs, rocky riverbeds, and "teeth-gritting" downhills. Famous obstacles include sections named "Miss Piggy" and "Hunters Trail".

Legendary Winners

The event helped launch the career of Alfie Cox, who won it 11 times. Other notable winners include Wade Young, Darryl Curtis, and Brett Swanepoel

CLASSES AND TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS


8.1 High School Open to riders from the year of their 13th birthday to 31 December of the year in which their 16th birthday occurs. Maximum permissible capacity: 150cc 2‑stroke. Championship Class Note: From 2027 the maximum permissible capacity will be 125cc.	8.2 E1 Open to riders from the year of their 16th birthday. Eligible motorcycles: 125cc – 200cc 2‑stroke / 250cc 2‑stroke 150cc – 250cc 4‑stroke Championship Class E1 and E2 may be combined.
8.3 E2 Open to riders from the year of their 18th birthday. Eligible motorcycles: Over 255cc 2‑stroke Over 255cc 4‑stroke Championship Class E1 and E2 may be combined and scored both separately and combined.	8.4 Silver Open to riders from the year of their 13th birthday and older. 8.6 Grand Master Open to riders from the year of their 55th birthday and older. Motorcycles may be any capacity. Non‑Championship Class	8.7 WOW Leisure Class Age and engine capacity regulations must follow the National Enduro SSRs (see Article 12a). This is a Non‑Championship Social Class. The maximum race distance for WOW riders is limited to 25% of the full Senior Class (E1 & E2) distance.
8.8 Automatic Multi‑Class Scoring Riders entering the Grand Masters class automatically enter and score in both the Masters and Seniors classes free of charge.
